Bizum is mainly used for small transactions between friends and family, such as splitting bills or paying for a friend’s birthday gift, but, more often than it should, people forget to pay their part, even after reminding them with a text. The relatively long user journey implied by using Bizum increases drop-off rates, which translates into fewer transactions being made.
Design a WhatsApp functionality that allows users to send money through the app, focusing mainly on trying to make the user journey as simple as possible in an attempt to reduce drop off rates and make the overall experience more seamless.
Having only 24 hours, the design process for this project was a compact version of the commonly used Research, Ideate, Define, Prototype, Test process.
This is a problem statement that I’ve personally experienced; the research for it was mainly based on talking to other people and trying to find other profiles that also experienced the same. The ideation phase was focused on looking for ways to accomplish our goal successfully; to shorten the user journey as much as possible. Next, wireframes were not necessary having WhatsApp already a defined structure, so high-fidelity designs and prototypes were made.
High-fidelity designs maintained the same aesthetic as the main WhatsApp screens to avoid users being confused. Also, because Bizum is only available on mobiles and WhatsApp is a mobile-dedicated app, there is no responsive version, even though it could be designed in the future.
I really enjoyed this 24 hour design challenge because I was able to propose a solution for a problem I personally struggle with while also touching briefly all of the design process phases. Next steps for this project would be to add a responsive version of the user flow and to start connecting with engineers to turn the designs into an actual WhatsApp feature.
